Blue John Cavern

Blue John Cavern sits at the foot of the impressive Mam Tor landslip and is accessible via the old road, on foot, or by Winnats Pass by bus or car. Of the 14 known and named veins of Blue John in Treak Cliff eight are found in Blue John Cavern. Blue John Cavern is a short drive from Jaret House bed and Breakfast in Tideswell, Derbyshire in the Heart of the Peak District National Park

The mineral has been mined here for centuries is still extracted in the winter months. The Blue John Cavern is steeped in history and old mining equipment is on view inside the cavern.

The caverns you'll visit on a tour are all natural water-cut passages and contain stalactites, stalagmites and huge cavernous rooms. The Waterfall Cavern and the Grand Crystallized Cavern with its multi-coloured dome are spectacular as is Lord Mulgraves Dining Room where his Lordship entertained miners, and where fine veins of Blue John can be seen in their natural state in the limestone. The Variegated Cavern is approximately 200 feet high and 30 feet wide.

Carol concerts and posh dinners have been held in the Cavern, great for the diners less so for those delivering and serving the food!
